Last March 2020, Salvador Dali’s remarkable diptych led the Bonhams’ Impressionist and Modern Art sale in London. This oil-on-wood panel painting depicts a couple with a shiny lining and heads full of clouds, entitled as Couple aux têtes pleines de nuages. This painting was sold for USD 11,232,718; the work, which had never before been offered at auction, came from the Italian Modernist composer Giacinto Scelsi’s collection. Scelsi was an associate of the Surrealist circle, spending time with Dali and Gala during their Italy travels.
“It has been a real privilege to bring one of Dalí’s surrealist masterpieces, Couple aux têtes pleines de nuages, to auction for the first time. This was a signature work by the artist, revealing his two great obsessions – Freudian psychology, and his great muse, Gala.” – India Phillips, Global Head of Bonhams Impressionist & Modern Art department
“Dalí painted this incredible diptych at a time of intense personal discovery and expression, while the world around him erupted into conflict. I am delighted that this work gained the attention it deserved.” – India Phillips, Global Head of Bonhams Impressionist & Modern Art department
