Around the month of March, Skarstedt opened a new gallery in Florida. The temporary location, which measures 800 square feet and is located in The Royal Poinciana Plaza at Palm Beach, joins other New York galleries that have relocated to the region, including Acquavella Galleries, Levy Gorvy, PACE, and Sotheby’s. Skarstedt is also launching a new site with an exhibition comprising of new metal sculptures by KAWS.
The COMPANION sculptures depict the famous figure in a variety of relaxed postures, ranging from seated to reclining. The sculptures were influenced by the KAWS:HOLIDAY inflatable pieces that were place in key cities across the globe. The inflatable COMPANION, created in partnership with AllRightsReserved, had its debut in 2018 in Seoul at Seokchon Lake. Since then, the large-scale figurine has explored the Japanese base of Mount Fuji, Hong Kong, and Taipei.
With a developing appreciation for the traveling COMPANION, KAWS incorporated a special camping experience with overnight accommodations along the base of Mount Fuji in their fourth installment of HOLIDAY, reflecting the mood of the reclining figure with its hand casually lying on its knees and tummy propped up. The Mount Fuji Mate resurfaced near Dhow Harbour just a few months later, in connection with the artist’s show at the Fire Station in Doha in 2019, coordinated by Germano Celant, and marking the artist’s first solo art venture. For the first time in aluminum, a new posture of a relaxing couple and kid will be displayed as well.
KAWS creates new sculptures that symbolize leisure, in contrast to COMPANION’s generally gloomy, solemn, and downcast demeanor by rousing personalities from his cast of figures and altering shape shapes and sizes with subtle movement. These reflective opposites allow the visitor to enjoy simple pleasures, providing a welcome break from the weight of our current circumstances.
